Unlucky defeat.

Lots of positives from the game today even tho we lost 1-0. This is a poor start to the season, no doubt about it but if we perform like we did today, especially in the second half, we shall see a dramatic inporvement in results as the season ends.

Chimbonda had a great debut and looks like he could well be an excellent buy and Benny Boy continues to impress me - he is quick, strong for his size and gets forward well. He should also have had an assist as Defoe missed a sitter as well as Mido. Keane did well dropping deep but did not look like scoring. I think its time for Defoe to start in Prague but we shall see.

King did well on his return and Jenas had a reasonable game. Davids bustled well but still had too many wayward passes. Ghaly looked ok but we lacked width when the full backs were not able to get forward. Lennon has a knee problem - lets hope it is not too serious. Zokora should start on Thursday as I thought he played well but Ziegler showed why he has not been starting.

Onward and upward!

COYS!

Ps: Is Spurs on channel 5 on Thursday? My Sky+ suggests that Channel five are showing highlights only - I thought they were showing it live. Can someone confirm? Cheers.

haha, forgot to comment on the game..
Yeah, i thought chimbonda and ekotou (u know who i mean) played well, and king had a good return. Shame murphy only cam on with 10 minutes left, as i'd liked to have seen more. Ghaly was ok, nothing great. but i'd say jenas was nothing much either. Davids was probably our worst player on show, his passing was aweful! shame lennon was out, would have been interesting with richardson attempting to track him back. (who knows, utd might have been down to 10 men)
It's time for keane to sit down for a few matches and let our little man start his season properly! (defoe, that is).
Mido was kinda ok, but i guess he needs to play a few more games to get into it. shame we missed 2 sitters!

Would just like to add i thought our performance today was outstanding. Was absolutely delighted with the back 4 in particular, new full backs really impressed and overall we were unlucky not to have come away with a point.

I thought every player was superb with the exception of Jenas who just doesn't do it for me! He gets in the right positions but is absolutely clueless when it comes to the final ball, on numerous occasions today he was just outside the manure box with time and space, but he didn't know what to do. Can't wait for malbranque to return from injury and make his debut, i think the team is complete when he does!

Spurs played much better than i thought they would do, specially with the line up they put on. I dont know what you guys are saying about ekotto!, he s looks quite good going forward but too many he ball watches, and the players get behind him, i think Lee should play instead he maybe right footed but defensively he s better. Davids gave away the ball too much, but at least he was bustling enough to make man u passes go astray, after he went off, we didnt even retain possession that well. Jenas & Davids have to be on the bench, come on Jol show you dont have any favourites! I think defoe should start too, he looks sharp though he missed a sitter

I actually thought that JJ did alrite today, chimbonda had a great game, as did king, just need 2 take our chances, please let lennon be ok

ok we lost, but much improvement on last time out.
chimbonda was our best player i thought. dawson looks so much more assured with ledders alongside him.
ekotto looks ok, but gets caught out ball watching sometimes - inexperience. i think he needs a few more games or maybe let lee have a couple.
davids was awful - so many stray passes. a more clinical team would have buried us.
jenas was ok'ish, nothing special. ghaly got into it more as the game went on - surely a premiership 1st with 2 egyptians in a side?!?!?
defoe looks like he has a point to prove, keane was anonymous, too isolated.
the team in general looked so much better when mido (do i play with too much passion???) went from left wing to centre forward.
overall a good display, but still lacking that killer touch.
well thats my opinion, am sure we will start to climb the table as players get used to each oher and injured players come back.

wheres that idiot who was calling for jol to be sacked last week ?!

ye i also noticed that we didnt have a wall for the man utd freekick that led to the goal. If we did have one, ronaldo would never have been able to shoot so directly at robinson (with the sun in his eyes as well)

thought that chimboda has justofied his price tag. feel that if defore had started that he would have bagged one. keane proved that he is not an out and out striker like someone the same size (johnson, defoe, bellamy) as he has no pace at all. great box finisher but not an out an out stiker.
alos thought that ghaly did really well and that jenas played well (heseems to only do that in the big games but jol loves him. it was obvious that mido was told to pull left and confuse man utd by being a supplier to JJ making lat eruns intot the game. king was superb. dawson looked not as confused. davids is getting older but still showed more committment than all 22 players on the pitch. another robinson mitake as keepers like cech and given always punch at big strikes like that. got caught in two mines and should have put a fist to something tavelling that fast from a set piece. he does not like shots at spedd around the upper torso. down low he is the best keeper in the country and relflexes are up ther with cech and szwartser. we now have 8 (murphy, malbranque, jenas, davids, huddlestone, ghaly, zakora, taino) who are ALL central midfielders and only 2 recogised wingers in ziegler and lennon.. can you believe this? if we were a side that prefered to play in the middle of the park then cool but we are not everton and we try to play crosses in but the tallest player is doint this? We really need to offload murphy in the next window and get a real creative midfielder (i would love riquelme- what a player!) until then we should play one touch through the middle in a diamond formation like this :
1 3 2 (5 indef) 2 1 2

Robinson
Gardner, King, Dawson
Chimbonda, Assou-Ekotto
Lennon Zakora
Keane
Defore, Berbatov

Kreane can be the driving force of the midfield. He can do this.

Anyone agree?

How much money has Martion Gross already spend in assembling this squad? Must be getting on to 50m? abd how many players in - 30ish? And yet there are still glaring holes in the squad.....

And we are where in the table?

Losing ONE player isnt a suitable for excuse for such a failure.

maybe Jol shouldnt be beyond critcism.

The first 10 - 15 minutes we wasn`t anything special but we did find our feet eventually i think Chimbonda had a very good debut and ekotto played exeptionally well also ! with the return of King at teh back can only boost the conidence of Dawson who also played well. When Defoe came on he lifted the teams confidence and mido played ok the main thing we missed was Aaron lennon !! gahly is good but he cant fill Lennons boots on the right overall we played well we were just unlucky well lets focus on Prague now in midweek and hope Lennon is fit to play COYS

I have to agree in that I have no interest in the wanky UEFA cup. Its just for alsorans, and mugs like us who threw it away right at the death and think it is some sort of achievement - i think that must say everythign about the mentalitity of our fans.

5th place after holding 4th all year is not a success....Jol must take some blame for our poor end to last season and the beginning of this.

Bad bad signings, bad tactics (4 CENTRAL MIDFIELDERS!!)

And the reoccuring, new team, just learning to play together excuse he keep insulting our intelligence with.

Of course they are all enw to each other you dopey git, its because we have no stability of contiuity because you repalce the whole frirst team every tranfer window - dont patronize us with that excuse when we all know well enough it is YOUR fault Jol.

Feel the Tottenham of last year would have beaten this under strength utd side. Here are the positives and negatives we can take out of this game:

POSITIVES:
1) More effort and more solidity in the centre of the park today, but so we should have with 4 solid working midfielders deployed at the expense of our only authentic winger Arron lennon. We tried to win this one boring Bolton style, but that misfortunate early goal made our task difficult.

2) Defence looked more solid with the restoration of our trusted King - Dawson partnership. Also felt the right side looked less vulnerable with the more solid, speedy Chimbo. Hoped for more right side runs from him which perhaps will come as he establishes himself. He did a good job nullifying the effect of Richardson. Ekotto also worked hard looks speedy and more solid than Pyo ever did, a couple of good crosses too.

3) Thought Zokora looked very composed holding his position well, allways making himself available to link from defence, as well as making good simple passes, should definately keep his place.

4) Good to see Jol giving chances to Ghaly and sub appearances for Ziegler and Murphy. Ghaly looked ok, tried hard to create something. Slightly suspect looking temperament....was not amazing though, probably looked better than he was due to Houdini (Jenas) whom amazingly seemed to dissapear again.

5) Good to see Jol brave enough to sub Davids, sorry to say, he did try very hard, but seemed to run around like a headless chicken often getting in Zokora's way. He did make one great pass to Dawson who unfotunately missed.

6) 3 good chances to Dawson, Defoe and Mido while Utd created very little at home.

NEGATIVES:
1) Why was Mido playing left wing when Keane was on?! he didn't know what to do with the ball when came in to his feet. It left Keane looking too small and isolated to cope alone in the middle. Mido did not look himself today, lacked his agressive presence of last year, losing weight should not be an excuse. Although sure he will get better with match practice/fitness.

2) Why was Keane subbed?! looked like our only skillful player in Lennon's absence, should have been kept on as we were 1-0 down. Unfortunately his and Davids replacements did not make any impact. Ziegler - didn't look the left side solution, Defoe tried hard, but very little service. Murphy had too little time in a tight game to make any impact.

3) Robbo - although debateable, could have punched/parried that shot to safety instead of right in front in the box, as it was straight at him, although made a great 1-on-1 save at the end to make up for it.

4) CREATIVITY - Very little in the way of penetrative on the ground passing, obvious this will be our biggest problem this year. We have too many defensive midfielders. MJ needs to pick the best of the DM bunch, in my mind should include Zokora and Tainio. Needs to bring back Lennon and maybe use more of Keano's creativity in perhaps a deeper role. Huddlestone needs to start getting some playing time, or he will never learn.

SUMMARY:
This obvious lack of creativity coupled with 3 missed chances by Dawson, Defoe and Mido cost us all 3 points. It is clear MJ will not know his best team for another 3 or 4 matches, by then we may have slipped too far behind for a champions league spot. I still have faith MJ will get it right and get us fighting for at least another uefa spot. After all Utd never made mugs of us at least.

i wasnt able to go to old trafford and had to settle for watching it on prem plus.
one thing i must say, no matter how well or bad the team plays, the away support over the last few seasons is nothing short of fantastic.

75000 attendance, 5000 one set of supporters, 70000 the other set - i take it we only had the 5000 not the 70000 ?! the way we sang throughout, totally embarassed the home fans, as we do every other week away from the lane. whats the point of having such a big crowd (ok, the revenue) and not making yourselves heard?

one other point, i am sick to death of having to put up with anti spurs commentators on sky. this week, ian darkey - gooner and gordon mcqueen - ex-manure !!
still at least it wasnt trevor francis - twat.

see you in Prague

Jol has teh tactically ability of Gross and the continuity of the tinkerman ranieri.

Millions spent, players in and out like we have a revolving door and still Jol doesnt know what team to put out.

The man fluked it last year. which come to think of it wasnt all that great was it? 5th and out of both cups at first hurdle? Are we that desperate for success that finishing once where Blackburn, Boro, Bolton and the like aim for every year is an achievement? Look where we are again.....one season finishing (relatively) high in the league really isnt all the great.

What would be the point in getting rid of Jol when he has assembled a team for some other twat to come in after 4 league games, give Jol a chance it will take us time to adjust with so many players comin through

By the way, no way should we be thinking about Martin Jol being replaced, unless were fighting relegation which I doubt very much. Still believe that we're a good bet for at leaat another uefa place...and come on lets be fair, compaired to our past managers that will still represent great progress. This season may be slightly transitional due to Ekotto, Chimbo, Zokora all being completely new and then Mido, Ziegler, Ghaly, Huddlestone, Murphy and Davenport being "like new players" due to their minimal involvement with the team in the last 8 months in Mido's case and more for the others. So there is a lot of players adjusting to the prem and the rest of last seasons team need to adjust to the new players. It will take time Im afraid. Look at Sir Alex Ferguson, was on the verge of being sacked then in about his second or third full season finished about 14th, but won the FA Cup which saved his head. The rest is history.
