Carrick - Yes or No?
Recently I just don't get it with Michael Carrick. Time after time he will pick up the ball and play a great pass out wide and set up an attack but more and more recently he is reminding me of Vinney Samways, not Glenn Hoddle as some have likened him to.
More Carrick passes seem to go backwards than forwards. Maybe this is not always his fault as the movement from the rest of the midfield can be pretty static but against Charlton he was very poor indeed. Even the Spurs crowd cheered when he was substituted.
As usual Charlton played five in the middle. As we stick to 4-4-2 for most of the time we need the midfield to work hard and break down any Charlton possession but Michael Brown had to do it all himself. Brown may not be the most gifted of footballers but he will put his foot in where needed and will work his socks off. He did ten times the amount of work Carrick did today. I'm fed up with seeing Carrick bottle out of challenges like he did today. He hides from challenging for the high balls as well and fails to put opposition players under pressure. It's not good enough. Spurs need someone to really take control of the middle of the park. They need someone to step up and say "I'm in charge here" to the other Spurs players and the opposition. Maybe one day Carrick will do that but while he continues to ponce around believing he is better than he is then that day looks far off in the future.
On Saturday Jol should start with Brown and Davis in the middle based on Carrick's recent performances. I wonder if he will?

I agree about Carrick. And why the hell can he not strike a ball in anger???
He seems too lightweight, I was/am a big fan of his but he needs to toughen up and start controlling the midfield, maybe now that he has more competition with Davis he will start getting stuck in.

why does he need competition before getting stuck in? He should just put everything in, every game he plays! he is consistently absent and he talks about gettin back in the england squad?? wonder which planet is he in?

Carrick had possibly his poorest game since MJ took over. He's never seemed to have the stomach for a really hard tackle, but his task became harder when we failed to take even one of three very presentable chances. Charlton just closed up after that. I think Reid emerged as possibly our most creative midfielder at present. In the central attacking midfield role I believe there's a job that Keane COULD claim if he wanted to. His intelligent touch to set up Kanoute was possibly our best move and an example of what we have been missing from central midfield. Also, I think a creative, goalscoring (!) Keane in midfield coupled with the industrious Brown would work rather well. What about it, Robbie?
Of course, Defoe and Kanoute must regain their confidence quickly. Sorry for straying a bit from the main question.

i also agree. If its one thing that irritates the hell out of me its when players bottle a 50/50 challenge. Against Villa (L 1-0) i was bloody embarrassed to see so many bottled challenges from spurs players. I see this alotwith Carrick and its annoying he's clearly a gifted footballer, but gone are the days when a player can simply be a midfield playmaker- in todays prem league, you hve to be the complete player, like brown but with carricks passing ability. I love micky brown.
Is anyone else interested as to what next yrs midfield will look like?

Totally agree. He's average. Let's sell him to West Ham
