Spurs unlikely to finish fourth

This weekend's games have been the death of our Champions League hopes for this season.  Bolton, Blackburn and the scum all won over the weekend while another late goal, caused by error prone Stalteri, saw us drop more points.  By the time we play Birmingham on Saturday the scum will have probably over taken us putting the pressure on us to win against the relegation fodder.

Of course most of us did not expect too much from the Chelsea game and it is not this game that has caused us the problems.  Other games have due to our inability to close a game off.

Fulham is a prime example.  We never looked that great but were all on for a point.  However we give away a stupid free kick and then  fail to do the most basic of marking in the box and lose a point.

Sunderland is another prime example.  All ready for three points before we let them sneak a point in the 88th minute.    Just these three results alone we would have had four more points leaving us 6 points ahead of the scum instead of two.  Incluse the West Ham debacle and the difference could have been 8 points.

So why does this happen.  In my opinion it is mainly down to the players.  Individual faults have cost us and the main one is Stalteri.  Everyone in the whole ground knew his clearence against Chelsea should have seen the ball in row Z.  Instead the ball was in the back of the net and another point dropped.  He needs replacing come season's end.  Jol also has to take a share of the responsibility.  It is hard for him to make a large difference to what players do with the ball from the touch line but subs in stoppage time disrupts play and slows down the tempo.

Looking closely at our run in we can see some tough games ahead.  Away games at Newcastle and Everton won't be easy while I think a win at the Library will be almsot a necessity.  Winning at West Ham as well will be needed if we are to stand a chance of fourth spot.

What goes in our favour is of course the sheer lack of games we have left to play.  Bolton and the scum are still in Europe and we have to look to these games as our one big hope left.  If it can tire them sufficently and we get a couple of breaks then you never know.  I hope we can make fourth but I expect UEFA cup next year now, not Champions League.

COYS!

Saddens me to day it, but I don't see a European slot for us at all. Arsenal and Bolton are simply better at getting the job done, and the likes of Blackburn are in better form. Expect us to finish 7th or 8th and it not be good enough.

I agree with you about Stateri, but MJ is more cupable.
Stephen Kelly played well last season but has never had a look in this season. If Keane or Defoe were playing as badly as Stalteri they would be on the bench for the next game.
And I think that a Defoe/Keane partnership would have caused Chelsea more problems than Keane/Mido.

Cracks me up....One week after a win fans are like "were definitely going to do it" the next week after a defeat it's "were not gonna do it" if we win the next two it will look good again, and who knows we may win loads of our last 9 games and give us a surprise. Things are going to be tough, but we have to just believe, hope and stand by us. Wait and see rather than jump to conclusions.

im am completly gutted, firstly we loose to chelski who to be honest we didnt go into the game favourites tp pick up anything but towards the end i was happy to walk away with a point knowing we were increasing of arsenal, but no stalteri does it agen it fuks us up and then to top it all off scum go and win, for fuk sake spurs pull it together close off games otherwise we can kiss european football altogether goodbye...seriously spurs get a grip and lets get a few wins and stay 4th...COME ON THE YID'S

Get a grip FFS!!!

We are not worthy of being 4th spot as it is and we can all see why with recent performances. It has helped us that we were knocked out of both cups in the first match and that frankly the rest of the prem has poor sides.

Even Jol has said "4 years" so why are you all so "gutted".

You people all need a slap, no wonder everyone says we have the most fickle fans in the Prem

Yeh lets give up now cos it would take a near miracle for arsenal to drop more points away from home wouldnt it? Twat! y look down the table instead of looking up we could still get 3rd with liverpool strugglin to net goals they are almost certain to drop points and we can catch them if we stay positive and thats us real fans cheering them on and instilling that confidence to finish above them seagulls. we will finish 3rd say it with me!!

Get rid of Salt, fair enough!
I to think we should have played keane/defoe in the later stages of the game.
Why didn't we use Lennon? Why did we let Zigler go?

But it's still in our hands and we can do it... if we stick together!

Why is everyone slagging off Salteri yes it was a bad clearance but Robbo was too far over to his ight post but no one slags him off. We would have taken this position with 9 games to go its still in our hands to win CL let alone UEFA which we would have taken at the the start of the season. Thought Carrick and DAvids were poor yesterday Huddlestone is the future

Perhaps thats because often Robinson is faultless and Stalteri is payed a lot of money to stop errors like that from occuring he has not yet settled an each and every game that passes shows up his faults worse than the game before!

we have tough games left but theyre aint no easy games in the prem.
We need to get behind the team not start calling for heads, it is our duty to instill a confidence in the players - what comes off the terraces, i believe effects the team as much as what the manager tells them.
i have been going to spurs since 72 and this team of youngsters we have now is certainly one of the best i can remember and they're is so much more to come.

Visiting Bolton fan here, I wish you no ill will (as opposed to that myopic Yaffle up the Seven Sisters Road). Just to pick up on the stated lack of substitutions, twas on the telly the other day that Mourinho has made the maximum three substitutions in all but one game this season, while Jol was at the bottom of the list. You can say the first XI is chosen for a reason, but it's a 14-man game these days and it's hardly as if Spurs don't have quality on the bench. As for Lennon's absence, I guess you could say Jol anted to keep it solid; but when a Spurs fan at worked asked me "How the f--k are we gonna beat Chelsea", I said "set Lennon onto the left-back, whether it's the wrongfooted Gallas or the plain crap Del Horno". If Gallas had been more worried about keeping an eye on Lennon, he wouldn't have been up the other end scoring, would he?

Anyway enjoy the rest of the season, from where I sit you're playing your best stuff in years. Fourth is still attainable for you, but Uefa would still represent progress... and I can see Paul Robinson "doing a Tony Parkes" in next season's final!

Yours in football,

Stalteri's only mistake on the second Chelsea goal was to allow Gallas to cut inside and fire off a shot with his right foot. But the shot was both unexpected and unstoppable. Give Gallas credit. If Lee had done that (if he even could) we'd all be singing his praises, not slagging the marking. Carrick, Jenas, Mido (why so lazy?) all made mistakes, as do most players. That's why they play the games.
Having said that..I'm dissapointed in Jol's tactics.
Why not settle for a point and waste time with subs, etc instead of trying to greedily go for the big upset victory? He should know better, and have been satisfied with an away draw.
Also, Defoe needs to play, so why not try a 3-4-3 with Lee at his preferred RB position and Keaneo dropping deep? Is it too late to change formation for these players, or are they not professionals who should adapt?

Put it this way we're still fourth... We have more points and if we play like we did against Chelski and get that bit of luck then their's no reason we cant stay up there for the next 9 games...

Indeed it's a good sign that expectations have changed for Spurs this year. However, now that they have, it's not unreasonable to point out the team has dropped too many unecessary points (ie. Fulham, Sunderland, West Ham). Spurs were good enough to win these games, but not for dumb errors which expensive pro footballers ought not make at this level. C'mon lads. You have the talent. I watched the game on tv here in Florida, and thought the folowing...MJ needs to become a bit shrewder with his substitutes..Lennon should have played at least 30 mins, and defoe should have come on for mido who looked crapp in 2nd half. Lee had a great game, and should be given a second chance, he does need to improve. Stalteri is not good enough for top 4 side in prem, simple as that..Hes decent, but lacks the level of skill we need..We should buy bridge in summer, play Lee on right with kelly back up. We CAN still finish 4th, have to beat the arse at the library..Its gonna be a belter of a game....

What we all must remember is that we are exceeding expectations this season as it stands. Our goal is any type of European fiitball and for that we are still on course. Although you would not think it this team is new and has only been together for a little over a year and yet we are top 4. Were doing alright and will only get better with time. Our right back needs to go back to basics and learn the art of hoofing it. This is the most basic art , one of which should come natural to any defender. It was a pathetic attempt to clear the ball by Staltari , nuff said about it the better. Roll on the next game cause thats all that matters now, stay cool , keep the faith and who knows anything is possible

i'm utterly disappointed with Stalteri. Towards the 2nd half of the season he made numerous individual mistakes and these mistakes caused spurs precious points on so many occassion. remeber Jerome Thomas' goal? Stalteri should be replaced or at least be relagated to 2nd choice. it sucks to go to work on a monday on the back of a loss.

There is a lot of nonsense being written above. A few things are very clear and simple:

1 - Jol should not go. He has already achieved more than any of his recent predecessors. More points per game, and even if we slip a bit, out highest finish inthe Premiership. That is called progress.

2 - Our CL chances are not finished. If anyone had shown you the fixtures of us and our nearest rivals, you would have accepted the Chelsea match as a defeat and that Blackburn, Bolton and the Scum wold win theirs this weekend. Tehre are more games to come.

3 - We need to win all our home games and beat Everton away (we always beat Everton). This will mean that avoiding defeat at the Library shoudl be enough for fourth place.

4:46 AM, March 13, 2006

After spurs had played an excellent 1st half, it became clear after 60min that Martin Jol was happy with a draw. Which team that thinks they can get 4th place in the premiership will be happy with a draw at 60min against anyone, especially after we looked like we could win it. Especially after we have Lennon who is easily our best player of the season. Which manager in the premiership wouldnt play their most potent attacking player. Lennon should actually go and play his football at a team that wants to win, no matter who the opposition is. Who says one team should beat another because they playing less games. Thats bullshit. If that was the case, MJ in the last 15 min should have played Defoe, Keane, Mido and Lennon on the pitch all at once. The best form of defence is attack. 4th Place is in our hands and 3rd is achievable, just like a draw this weekend was in our hands, but a win was also achievable if we wanted it. I think we can finish 3rd. Its there for the taking. Carrick has been nothing special this season.

im embarassed to call myself a spurs fan having read throught what half of you have written

get a grip. we are still in 4th and there are plenty of games still to go - we have as good a chance as any of the chasing pack of finishing in 4th and if we end up in 5th or 6th then we have still had a good season. champions league would be amazing but surely you would have taken a uefa cup spot at the start of the season?

and as for those saying that jol should go if he doesn't drop stalteri - you lot can f off and don't even call yourself spurs fans. yes stalteri has made mistakes and i am sure that jol will have noted them down - he isn't blind you idiots - and he will take the necessary action. in his timeas manager he has had hundreds of decisions to make and has invariably got them right - he isn't going to get every decision right, not even the pricks at arsenal and chelsea get everything right

stop your moaning and stop giving others teams' fans the ammunition to call us the most fickle fans in the country. we are doing well and jol will make sure that we continue to do so. if you want to moan then piss off and go support another side - we don't want you at spurs

Just pissed off as it seems that we are doomed to always lose to the ruskies, Draw would've been fair although we rode our luck at times but Jenas' shot was absolute cack, 1 on 1 with the keeper at least make him work for the save.
It was a side picked for containment, although Davids still isn't 100%.
We had some bright spells in the game, but there were times Chelsea looked like they could cut through us at will.
Would've liked to have seen Lennon at some stage, he would've kept Duff/Gallas pegged back a bit on their left, Lee played well, defended well and got forward but the crossing....!!, he should be given a go on the right, Stalteri was, IMO, at fault for the 2nd goal, a woeful clearance (had more time on that one) he then allowed Gallas to step inside him, no keeper would've stopped that shot but 9 times out of 10 Gallas would balloon that into row z.
Mido looked lively but in the wrong areas always out wide when we need his areial prescence in the box, Jenas was poor besides the goal, control and first touch wasn't good.
It's still in our hands but every poor result makes it harder, and with our record against relegation threatened teams, i'd say UEFA is the best bet but I'll keep believing

Was watching the game with a mate who is a liverpool fan and we seemed on common ground when we agreed that MJ appears to be a lot like Sven - plays for draws and is scared of making substitutions, which more often than not fails us (and england). This management style sickens me. Now before you all throw your arms up like babies I think MJ has been fantastic for us and brought us up higher than I thought possible, but being like this rather than having a "proactive" approach is failing us again and again... :( fair enough we have a strong side but MJ seems to "want a draw" and then be scared of making changes. If he wanted to keep the system +players the same that's up to him (hes the bosS), wat about bringing on murphy or huddlestone for the last 15 minutes when Davids was clearly tiring?! bringing on fresh legs late in the game is shurely an idea just to run run and run. or if playing for a draw take off a forward and bring on someone to help anchor the midfield.

who knows if lennon was on; would he have tied up gallas because he may of been on the left or the rite... on the otherhand, it might have been him that ran thru to kings great pass rather than "shit myself cos im too high up the pitch baby boy jenas".

anyways, I thought we played well, much better than I expected, except stalteri. and whoever said he was only culpable because gallas cut himside him, you're wrong, he gave the ball away like a sunday league footballer when it dropped to him. ANYWHERE would have been better than straight to the chavski foriegners foot.

We'll have to see how the rest of the games map out, but COME ON YOU SPURS!!!!!!!!!!!

Do we Spurs fans moan . We have lost 6 league games - when was the last time we could say that in March - we had often lost 6 league games by October . The next 9 are the test . If we blow it and do not finish in the top 6 then we are not ready for Europe . We then must hope Ledley and others are patient for another year and do not leave . Lets get behind the team for 9 big matches and see if they are good enough to handle the pressure .

it seems to me that alot of the goals we are conceding are from our own mistakes. Carrick was guilty for Chelskis first and Stalteri for the second. Row Z every time for me especially in the last few minutes of a game.

I don't want to be too critical of MJ as he has done a great job but I do want to say that I was extremely disappointed that we did not get Lennon running at their fullbacks and keeping them pegged back in their own half. Our formation invited them to run at us. We have to be more positive by playing to our strengths without being over zealous.

I think we can still do it if we play to OUR strengths. COYS

You might like a Chelsea fan posting here, but I'll try anyway. That was the best Spurs side I've ever seen , especially at The Bridge. Personally I think you could take 3rd , let alone the worrying about 4th. You're better than Liverpool by a country mile in my view because you play football and try to score. And it seems you have more fight and "spine" than Airline FC, maybe because like us you have a core of English players willing to bleed for the badge. If Defoe or keane had got on that ball instead of Jenas, do you have any doubt they'd have scored?

You were unlucky to have been undone by a top class strike in the end, although even the most blinkered would have to accept that on chances alone we were the better team. I think your team will dust this one down and I've no doubt they're good enough, its just whether they belive it. Two more things, the little Korean (?) guy - bloody hell does he ever stop running? Very impressed by him. Secondly, your fans were fucking marvellous leading up to, and through the tribute to Peter Osgood. When the announcer mentioned the behaviour when MH died and we played you, christ we even applauded you lot. It's nice to see that the true football fan community is willing to do the decent thing when someone dies so young. Of course after the tribute, normal hostilities were resumed, after all we can't be seen to be nice to each other for long, but I know in the MH lower that our fans were quietly impressed by the Spurs travelling contingents sense of appropriateness. Now, put it behind you and give Airline a good tonking at the library.

Re: 10.19am

Agree about Jol's annoying tactics but I reckon it's because of our current squad. He's trying for strength over creativity because of our abundance of solid(ish) central midfield types, lack of natural width and wobbly full backs. It's a difficult balance to get right especially with the inconsistancies of youth and inexperience but Jol's done so well doing this so far that our expectation has shot up way ahead of the real-term probability. Sadly even if as seems likely we end up lower than 4th, the perception will for many be that we've 'fucked up' whereas the truth is that other than finishing lower than 6th we will have had an awsome season well ahead of schedule.

Like most of you I'm not a Stalteri fan but why was the winning chelski goal his fault? He covered the left flank well enough to force gallas to cut inside at which point it was for Dawson/Carrick? whoever it was to block or force him to play it backwards. The shot was stunning and gave a great keeper no chance. I suspect if Defoe had done similar at the other end none of us would be claiming their defence was rubbish but would be applauding a fantastic piece of skill. That said, Stalteri can still fuck off!

Go on the Spurs!

At the moment i prefer Atouba to Stalteri but the real problem is midfield, no one is scared off us. I think spurs some how have to find some kind of form. It pisses me so much when we play four central midfielders, they always clog up the middle get short passes wrong, pass back, and invite the opposition to attack, as they know spurs are crap and doing it. We should not have bought murphy or ghaly, give huddlestone a chance I dont want his career wasted. WE MUST PLAY WINGERS, ITS SPURS TRADITION I WANT PLAYER TAKING ON OPPOSITION, bring back routledge zeigler , and play Lennon, get rid off the central ones , 4 good ones is enough.

Dear El,

What a fucking joke, mate i hope you never coach football because if you encourage defenders to force oppo's to cut inside from wide areas then you clearly know nothing about football.

Stalteri should of been looking to force Gallas out to the corner flag or touchline area, NOT allowing him to cut inside onto this shooting foot and giving him sight of goal (in the hope a CB will deal with it)

Granted it was a peach of a shot but please WTF?!! was that what you said?! Amateur

How can you criticise the man that is odds on to achieve our highest ever premiership finish? Fools. How far were we from Europe last year? Imagine what Jol could have done with the first 11 games of the season at his disposal as well.

The fact that everyone is complaining about missing out on the Champions League is a testiment to his success this season.

We haven't lost 4th yet and we won't give it up witout a fight.

I hope we don't do a bottle job like last season and end up failing to qualify for Europe altogether.

Some of Jol's selections & tactics have raised a few eyebrows/questions lately including my own but i am a firm supporter of the one who's 'got my hair' and trust him to guide us to greatness.

But right now it's hope for the best and expect the worst.............a familiar feeling indeed!

As usual the head-in-the-clouds mob can't see the obvious faults that stare them in the face. Of course Staltieri isn't good enough, nor is Mido, and Defoe seems to have his mind elsewhere this season. As for Martin Jol, he's done a fair job but totally lacks the tactical nous of a top manager - and no surprise because he's really just a coach - that's what he joined as. But his biggest fault is his obsession with central midfielders which as resulted in have a couple playing out wide, and out of position most games. Will we finish 4th ? No we won't the Arse will. But if we don't hold on to 5th place and a UEFA spot then it's another failed season as far as I'm concerned.

we are still on course to acheive this though more consistant performances are needed in the few weeks ahead.I feel we need just 3 or 4 more players in the summer to make us a worthy top 4 club again.lets get behind the lads for the remainder of the season and look forward to the summer and another nailbiting transfer window.

I feel exactly the same as you 12:49, well said.

however to the guy who replied to my post, stalteri was at blame for the winner, because forget the showing inside rubbish an the fact it was an unstoppable shot, gallas should never have had hte ball there in the first palce! wen it loops over 5 yards from teh edge of hte box any defender should (ESPECIALLY WITH HALF A FUCKIN MINUTE LEFT GRRR) that the ball goes ANYWHERE except where he fuckin put it. row Z, Fulham, fuckin newhere, except rite there, to the feet of an opposing player who's moving forward. :| thats why im fuckin annoyed and its amazing that half of you no so little about football that you can't even see that. Giving hte ball away like that would be a crime at anytime of hte game, but its murderation in injury time when we're on the back foot.

it's these mistakes that are costing us dear, and im pist about it because as peopel mentioned earlier, we WILL lose our best players if we don't qualify for europe, and ALL the improvements and STRIDES forward we have made this season will be lost because we'll have some two bit mid table not givin a shit team again. (worst case lol)

All you people talkin bout ghet behind the team and "why are you critiscising" reh reh reh, are you blind or just dumb?! I want us to do well as much as any and all of you lot, I just know the facts and unfortunately the fact is if we fail to qualify for europe itll b like takking 2 steps forward and then 2 steps back again. So scream your lungs out and sing all game because we clearly do need the support lol.

I think UEFA is definiately what we should achieve, (even if we're aiming for CL, uefa is good enough)

to where we finished last season - WE COULD OF FINISHED in uefa last year! we just bottled it - at the end of hte season, when the results mattered. we didnt produce.

its not a case of negativity - we are very happy with being in 4th, but it wud b a dissapointment because of how we've done in the recent part of the season is not a representation of how well we've done for the majority of it - so even tho yes wherever we end up itll b a fantastic result, havin showed the promise we have it would still be dissapointing to not hold on - we've been 4th for most of hte year for ***** sake!

Im not shure I wana give an opinion on CL or Uefa lol, either will do - what I do know tho is we need to qualify for europe and make sure we take advantage of our position to secure ourselves -

everyone says spurs shudnt be 4th and reh reh reh, when we qualify for europe we need to make sure we cement that position by spending well and improving the squad - this season could finally be the key that unlocks us on the road to finally being a "top" team again, rather than good but inconsistent mid table chaff. (and i say that with the greatest support and respect for the club.) I'm jus hoping we can do teh fckin business. :)

FACT - Arsenal & Bolton have a better balanced team than Spurs and have the experience to win when they need to. They will up their game and finish above us with the run in we have, although we will nab a UEFA slot this year. Dont dispair though chaps, this is a new young Spurs team, and next season if we keep our key players, claer out the shit and and improve our squad i honestly think we can challenge the TOP 3! Lets keep it real, and accept we are making steady progress. If MJ sorts out that midfield line up , puts noodles RB & buys a left back & left winger we will have a great team.

Get shot of Kelly, Gardner & Reid. The first two are positionally brain dead and cannot head a ball, and Reid has no pace, and you cannot play wing if you cant run.

Take heart that 2 years ago we were watching a bunch of muppets in spurs shirts (bar a few) with pleat in charge! At least now we compete in every game we play in, even if we play bad. Thats gotta be a first for years! give MJ time, and keep looking where we were and are to keep a grip on reality.

Re: 9.16 march 13

The point being that when you have a defender as slow on the turn and easy to get past as Stalteri he has no choice but to force an attacking player one way or t'other by shielding. Given the way a few players this season have run down to the byline and crossed for a simple tap-in or run through him and banged it in themselves it would seem best given his failings, to force them inside where at least there should be reinforcements to cover, which there was when gallas scored but whoever the cover was failed to block the shot just as Stalteri failed to effectively close down or tackle. Defences work as a team and two players were at fault so why just blame Stalteri? My comments were guided by what Stalteri is capable of not what he should do hence my signing off insult.
