Long ball fails to deliever

When we beat Charlton 3-1 a couple of weeks ago we played the ball through the middle to Keane and Defoe and did not result to long balls. When Mido returned we resulted to a more direct style which did get us an equaliser but nothing else. The fact we got the equaliser was because Mido was unmarked for the hoof from the back. Every other time Wigan marked him tightly and although he won a few flick ons they did not come to anything.

Our worst players on the field have to be the two full backs. Stalteri is going from bad to worse. He does not know when to go to the player or when to stay back and often makes the wrong choice. His attacking play with Lennon was non-existant and Kelly must deserve his chance now. On the other side Ting Tong has pace and a right foot. Ok if he was playing on the right but hes not. He gets to the byline and while we all hope for a first time cross he cuts back. Not so bad but he then cuts again back onto his left meaning he has to cut back AGAIN to his right - by now he is tackeld. Time for him to jog on.

Other players to note was Davids who was better than last week but not fantastic - Danny Murphy was useless. Why?

Fourth spot, no chance based upon forthcoming fixtures and current form. We worry about the scum but it could well be Bolton who nick it now.

Spot on!!!! But Murphy got better as the game progressed,so not totally useless....

I totally agree with your post - today we were shapeless and clueless. The lack of natural left footed players is beginning to afect the way we play - we have no natural balance so revert to diamond formation - it also beggars the question (again) as to why Edman was allowed to leave and why is Reto Ziegler not at WHL - if the management want him to get experience in the premiership then how about playing him at the club that has his contract??? Reto showed enough last season to warrant that he played some part in this season - very stange. We even had to use Jackson on the left recently. We have become transparent to the opposition - pass it along the back 4 and then give it to Robinson and hoof it up to try and get Mido to head it on - and for some variation we let Dawson hoof it up. Sort it out Martin or you are going to screw up a very good season so far.

We are going to miss out on a CL place or even a UEFA cup place on 4-6 points. That is if we continue to draw at home to Villa & Wigan, away to Sunderland & give away late goals to the above, Fulham & West Ham; cup games aside. Generally speaking Jol has given us consistancy & good results but many of them were by scraping through (Sunderland at home & others). Don't be afraid to drop players.

6:49 PM, February 19, 2006

I'm a charlton fan and i watched the game. Jenas was ill this morning and thats why Murphy played. As to Murphy, he was useless and you can have him for as long as you like. He doesnt like being closed down. He has to have a lot of time on the ball, otherwise he puts his head down like a little schoolboy and sulks for the rest of the game. Teams worked it out against us pretty quickly and that led to our downfall this season. He deserves to sit on the bench and sulk for the rest of his career, and watch out for his missus's column in the paper, she'll being having at pop at you lot soon!

for fuck sake, on paper we have one of the best midfields in the premiership so why the fuck cant we create anything through there. i agree completely that we use the long ball far too much, aaron lennon barely got a sniff of the ball today, what's the point in playing wingers if you're not going to use them. and as for stalteri i think i'd rather see dean austin back at full back than have to endure another shit performance from that wanker. wake up and smell the coffee martin before we're sliding down the table into our usual mediocre positions of years gone by.

I have to agree with all the comments - no natural width on the left is starting to hurt. I am totally bemused why Reto came back and went off again. Teams have started to work us out for sure.

However, we are still a lot lot better than any season in a long long time so let's show a little faith. We all have to admit that we never expected to be where we are this early in Jol's reign. Let's not get on his back too much, he is made us into a very hard team to beat, made WHL into a fortress and made some good signings. The old Spurs would have lost that game today and not been able to comeback from a goal down twice.

Despite losing a number of goals late on this season, we have also managed to pull things back against United, Villa, Charlton, Portsmouth, Wigan etc etc.

Time to kick on now in the close season, which I am sure we will. Uefa Cup is a miminum though

Huge disappointment, probably the worst we've played at home this season so far.
No coherence, no bite, no energy
NOt sure if we were just crap or whether Wigan played us well (probably a combination of both)
Scharner was pretty much man-to-man on Carrick which shut down our "quarter back" and put extra pressure on Led & Dawson
Also there strongest area (Chimbonda/Bullard) was our weakest
And why oh why does playing Mido mean we feel obliged to hoof it skyward??!!
Mido has a good touch and would be just as good in a slick passing side - check out the Egypt team!!
They had two big slow centre backs, the perfect opportunity to play through & behind
For the first time I have to seriously question Jol's tactical nous - we played into their hands.
Top 4 feels a million miles away tonight, so let's hope they can get on the training ground for the next 2 weeks cos Blackburn will be more of the same!!

Well another inept performance..
only decent game we've played this season is charlton..
we just don't create enough chances in a game - no movement at all. If chances were created I'm sure Defoe would be in the 20 goal bracket by now, as any chance he gets, he knows he's got to score, because that could be the only bloody one he gets all game.
one more thing... is it me, or is carrick the most over-rated player in the premiership. His set plays are pathetic, but still takes em. never goes forward, just sits in the centre circle - didn't vinny samways do the same, but get booed?.. had to get all my frustration out.. sorry if anyone offended.

I,ve posted some wicked comments recently just to get the conversation going...Sorry Chesthunt yid.. Salteri is a great player..etc etc. However I am a season ticket holder and would like to make some serious points to which you might agree or disagree in no particular order

1 - We are far ahead of where we expected to be this season and the lure of CL football so close is getting us all nervous

2 - Robbo is having a bad spell in what has been a great season

3 - We should never have sold Etherington a natural lefty

4 - We should never have let Reto go to Wigan on loan for sale to them at the end of the season

5 - Jenas never played today because rumour says it is him and Ashley Cole who are in the ring sting with Will Young

6 - Jol has done well but needs to make decisions on his best formation and players

7 - Why when Mido plays do we plat like Everton used to with Ferguson all long ball, we proved against Charlton that we can push and run

8 - Salteri isn,t that bad but if you want a replacement look at Phil Ifil

9 - Park Lane we don,t need to stand up if we hate SCUM or if we love Spurs, but need you to lead us when the team needs support as us in the Paxton obviously can,t

10 - Rennie is a C***

Fill free to respond positively but I now feel CL has gone and UEFA is a distant dream with the vultures waiting, King to Chelsea 17M, Carrick to M Utd, Defoe to Liverpoll 10M and possibly Robbo to ???

P.S. for those of u who bombarded "THE SHELF" when we first sgined jenas sayin he was crap are now looking a bit stupid aren't u!!! we were outbattled today and we missed his midfield engine and quality passing and movement.

We had to play Murphy, because according to Jol Jenas was ill with flu.

Murphy gave the ball away a number of times but did make a few tackles and got into space. Sadly he was not fit to last 90 mins(nor was Davids).

Question, why sell Michael Brown to Fulham? And loan Retro Ziegler to Wigan straight after his loan spell with Hamburg? Brown would have done a better job than Murphy who needs better match fitness, and we badly need Ziegler to play on the left wing.

Lee Young is all right foot - a serious problem for a left back. Strangely he did provide two reasonable crosses with his left foot when running out of pitch! Not a permanent player for the position.

As to Salteri, he needs to be dropped, or rested after his horror shows against Charlton & Sunderland (Wheres the battle harded Werder Bremen palyer that Jol talked about when we signed him?. We need to start playing Kelly instead.

We were clearly one dimensional with the long ball stuff, but that all started with Davids and Murphy being substituted.

We must do much better. One win in six is simply not good enough.

You know absoltely ntohing about football and your posts are alwasy irrelevent and wasteful and when that dawns on you, you try and state that it was only done to incite discussion??? Moron.

I agree with many posts, especially those calling for Stalteri to take a seat. Why? I had 10pounds on Defoe to score first and for us to beat Chalton 3-0. The moron cost me that by not staying goalside.

He then allows himslef to be muscled off the ball at Sunderland & then today he is at fault for their goal and then late on nearly let another player get goalside (thanks Robbo for an amazing stop).

Can't Martin see this?

Kelly isn't much better but I think Young Pyo is a marvelous player after watching hi in the Eireverdesie last season.

The team should be:

LB Ziegler (call him back FFS!)
CB King
CB Dawson
RB Lee
LM Taino/Routledge/Lennon
CM Carrick
CM Davids
RM Jenas (move inside diamond)
CF Mido
CF Defoe

Subs. Cerny, Keane, Barnard (give him a game please!) Huddlestone, One of LM the other out of squad

So many of you claim to want spurs to "take it to the next level". That means attracting new fans like me. The club, through their signings and hugely impressive form this season, have done their part, but it seems that supporters like you are letting the side down. Like I said earlier, not at all impressed.

God I've never read so much non-football related bollocks in my life.

I agree with comments made WAYYYYY up there at the top somewhere, that Lee would make a bloody brilliant right back, but is flawed at left back. Stalteri is apparently two footed, so maybe a change of scenery at left back would do him good!?

I also agree we should still have Edman at the club - one of the most consistent left backs we've had for 10 years, and he only plays one season. Madness.

Ziegler should also be here as cover.... with Naybet getting a few games in the run-in to give us some much needed experience!

Re: Dazza Jim

Where are you from?

No, I mean which planet?

Stalteri and Lee are without question the two weakest links in our 'first' team and the best remedy you can come up with is swap em over?!! Wot? Have you been on the sherry? And as for Edman being the best left back for ten years. That's not much of a claim is it? Edman's probably been as good as any player we've had for the last 10 years and I'm only half joking. Edman like Stalteri got jittery under pressure and would get all clumsy and hands-on. Kept giving away penalties or free kicks, that's why he was sold and that's why in a year or two neither Stall-terry or Lee will be a Spurs first teamer if a Spur at all.
Zeigler shouldn't be here because big Martin says he's better off on loan at the moment and that should be good enough for anyone unless you know better and Naybets good for handing experience to younger players during training but he's past it other than that. Do you remember his last appearance? Slow as a stodgey turd on the turn. I'd prefer Gardener (a la man city) any day. For now.

Interesting to read a few more comments from Jol about spending big money to take us to the next level.
Is he prodding Levy do you think?

El... (Is that El Hamdaoui? lol)

Cheers for the encouragement re- keeping to a football topic on what is after all a football forum.

However, I'm sticking to my guns on this one. I know Edman was a tad jittery at times, but if you consider he was only 25, played in an unsettled back line, and had his season interrupted by severe/life threatening concussion he had a damn fine season! His 40 yarder against liverpool was out of this world - it probably could have hit the planet you appear to think i live on, if it had not been on target.

I also think when him and Zeigler played together, they dovetailed brilliantly, being natural leftys, and never had a proper run in the team as a pair. I think Zeigler wanted to go on loan, rather than Jol simply letting him go - same with Routledge.

Naybet is still quality, even if he is slow - name a 36 year old who isn't! But every game I've seen him play, he's been alongside king or someone else with a bit of pace, and has looked comfortable. I'd at least have him on the bench, tis all.

With regards to my comments about Lee and Stalteri... I was just being positive about what we have got at the club now - rather than whingeing about who we could have there in the summer. Sometimes a change is as good as a rest, and Lee seems to be more than a little right footed... so why not try him at right back? Kelly has now proved he's got his sharpness back, and can play left or right very well. Bench Stalteri for a bit?

By the way, whoever it was that mentioned they would prefer Dean Austin back, rather than Stalteri - oh dear. I think they live on a more distant planet than I... poor soul!

El - some common ground acheived here?

Challenge to all on this forum -

Name our best full back pairing from the last 10 years. If it gets anywhere near the quality we currently have, I'd be gobsmacked. (Even though Stalteri and Lee are both running a bit HOT/COLD at the mo)

If we can get some backup in the Summer sales though, all the better.

dazza jim,

If you think Stalteri & Lee are 'quality' then you need your head checked mate.

THEY are the weak links in the team .

If i was Jol i would concentrate on improiving these areas in the summer
(along with adding a striker & Left footed winger)

All the best

2:32 PM, February 27, 2006

Anonymous dazza jim said...

Comments above maybe a little unfair...

Stalteri has only really been 'shyte' the last few games, when his errors have led to goals against. Up to then, no-one had a problem with him, he was a champions league player etc etc...

Also, if you remember, Steve Carr used to CONSTANTLY give the ball away in stupid circumstances in nearly every part of the pitch - usually when we were in full flow! His runs and tackling were great, but crossing and final ball were always poor in my opinion. Stalteri isn't as hard tackling, but his passing is much more consistent in my opinion - just needs to stand his ground more.

When I said the word 'quality' I didn't mean we couldn't do any better either - I just mean, compared to the likes of Dean Austin, Colin Calderwood, David Kerslake, etc... our full backs are amongst the best we've had in the last 10 years. There's always room for improvement!

And believe me, if I had a choice over Lee or Zeigler, I'd pick Zeigler... but hey its not one of Jol's options at the mo - so I was looking at what he CAN do - short of recalling him back from Pompey and sticking him in the 1st team.

I would like to see Kelly get more of a chance at right back, and hope we keep Ifil... but Stalteri can play anywhere in defence or midfield, despite what people think of his recent mistakes.

Everyone happy now? lol

Anonymous dazza jim said...

Oh striker and left footed winger...

Recall Zeigler, and Stick Barnard into the 1st team. Cost = Free
Also recall Routledge as cover for Lennon.

Then use money to reinforce previously mentioned full back positions.

(PS - Steve Carr also used to (and still does at Newcastle) constantly whinge about how bad others are playing, when he's having an absolute nightmare. He was a great player for a few seasons too.. shame)

5:17 PM, February 27, 2006

Blogger EL said...

Yeah ok Daz you make some good points and there's nothing wrong with talking up the positive side especially given the number of brats who've been on these sort of sites recently. Inspite of my Stalteri/Lee prejudice I do reckon they'd play better if our midfield wasn't so unbalanced all the time. Constant changes, players out of position, not match fit/sharp and no proper left winger. It's also easy to forget that our full backs haven't yet played a full season. they may be our weakest link skill wise but our midfield has been more responsible for our loss of form in the past few weeks in my view. Our current inability to pass or hold on to the ball whether we're under pressure or not is staggering at present and I do think that cheap givaways and breaks have put our full backs under more pressure than they have a right to expect. Also I agree with giving Kelly a go at right back and that when Edman was with us it was at least good to see a left footed player on the pitch but I can do without him myself.

El is actually my nicknam but as we possess an 'El' as you've mentioned in the team, I used it.

Re: 1.08 anon.

Well you were going great guns on Stall-terry & Lee then you completely blew it mentioning the overtly classy and much sought after - NOT! - Barny & Marney??? No offence to either of these players coz they're probably good lads but you can forget about them. Marney at best is a squad player if that and if Barns was premiership first team material he'd have got a game by now. They are not and never will be top 4 and that's where we're heading.

Well if Top 4 is where we are headed then in 2 years time we will need players like Barnard & Marney from our youth team in the squad, because the Uefa ruling will be that you have to have 4 players from your own youth team & 4 players that came through the youth teams of other english clubs. fact

Or maybe you are happy with the Jackson's of this world?

I just meant Naybet should be used in some capacity, rather than not at all. If you keep up to date with things, you would know Ledley King has had a groin problem for a few weeks now, and might need the occasional rest - as he has the small matter of a World Cup coming up and won't want to be having an operation just yet.
Taking that into account, I'd prefer to have Naybet step in, rather than Gardner - although he has definitely improved dramatically the last few games to give him credit.

I agree Kelly deserves more of a run in the team, and is slightly quicker. But it wasn't long ago, that virtually every person on this forum was claiming that Stephen Kelly was totally useless and couldn't handle the premiership, etc etc... how bloody quickly has that turned around eh!!??
Phil Ifil must also be gutted, as he had his debut vs Liverpool ages ago, and had a pretty good game for a 17 year old - only to be dropped in favour of Pamarot the game after. Now Pamarot has been judged as being not good enough, and Ifil is still stuck in the reserves behind 2 other players! Maybe after this loan spell he'll get another chance...

On a side issue, would love to see Stuart Pearce get the England Job, with him probably appointing Terry Venables as his assistant, helping him out tactically. Any opinions?

5:31 PM, February 28, 2006

Anonymous Anonymous said...

Keep up to date with things?
Like someone mentioned above you talk shit

Most Spurs fans couldn't give a toss if Ledley goes to the World Cup or not.

I'm more interested in him playing for Spurs for the REST of the season and then he can sort out what ever injury problems he has in the summer.

I'm sure everyone would like to see Ledders in a England shirt come the summer, but realistically, what are his chances of gettting a game if everyone is fit

I'd start with Ledley & Terry everytime but it's not like he would be starting for Sven's Engerlund is it?

...and Pearce for England - dreamer

5:59 PM, February 28, 2006

Anonymous Anonymous said...

Kelly was slagged off as a left back.
Pearce should be the assistant under Big Sam (totally underrated).
Agree on terry & Ledley first choice but like so many England managers before him sven doesn't seem to choose according to form. Plank.
As for that 4 youth player stuff?? It's news to me. Sounds like another well meaning but silly idea from those dippy sods at FIFA.

What about putting Bunjy in at left back, experience like Naybet and don't forget he scored 4 goals for us last year. Maybe stick Y.P.Lee on the left wing?

I agree with some of your points, but please be yourself, and don't pretend to be me! USE YOUR OWN FECKING NAME!

Bunje would make a good left back - and has done before when called upon. Gardner also has a good left foot - he could play left back quite well if called upon. Also has a bit of pace.

But NO, Defoe should not be sold, or Keane... or Mido... but Barney should definitely get a look in at some point.

Jackson tries hard enough, but isn't fast enough to beat people - and we frankly need that when challenging for European places.

Defoe clearly can't do it anymore, anyone see him v Uruguay, he was more interested in kicking their players because he is a little whiner boy

I would love that, he won the European Cup with Lazio remember, and could probably attract the likes of Beckham, Owen, Veron to The Lane. Think about it, he has much better pedigree than MJ and we could then push on to the 'next level'.

Re 12.15 March 03

I’ve decided to take your advice. All these two bob muppets slagging me off, sullying the great name of cheshunt yid on a public blogspot. It gets to me man. I know I put up a tough front but deep down I’m a sensitive soul innit. Here I stand on a tenth-storey spring board looking down at the little antlike people below. Before I jump I’d like to read you my suicide note:

Ting Tong

Ping Pong

PC Cunt

Park Lane Green Beret’s bird’s 18 yo sister

I’m an excellent driver.
