Appoint Jol now - Editorial.

This time last year Spurs had no manager, the fool Pleat was just keeping our head above water and everything was not quite right at Spurs. One year later Spurs have no manager, there isn't even a fool in charge and it could all very well go pear shaped.

However, I think Spurs are in a much better position than when Hoddle was given the boot last season. For a start we have a far more experienced Director of Football. Arnesen has denied that there was a rift between Santini and I think it's the media trying to stir things up that is suggesting there was a problem in the first place. I wait to be proved wrong but I think the "personal reasons" line is probably true.

Anyway, Arnesen was appointed to oversee all football matters. When he was at PSV I believe they won lots of things in 10 years, played in the Champions League etc but had 5 managers. That suggests to me that this continuity thing that Levy wants could work. So Spurs need to look for continuity right now instead of going on another 9 month search to appoint "the right man" leaving the club in limbo.

Thus, Martin Jol should be appointed ASAP to ensure continuity. It was no secret that he was being groomed for the job and Santini's resignation has just brought it forward. Jol knows the setup, is a well respected coach in Holland and has a good track record. He knows the team, the strengths and weaknesses and will provide the continuity that Tottenham Hotspur so desperately need. Doing anything else on Monday would be a disaster.

I agree, it was clear that Jol was being lined up for the long term. Get him in now and stabilise things straight away.

I agree . He was always going to get his chance its just arrived sooner rather than later. Tottenham have good players in the squad this year and should cope. Hopefully Martin Jol takes his chance because its his for the taking.

I think, for once, this is something that everybody agrees on. I have been very impressed with Jol whenever I have heard him (which hasn't been enough) and we all know how highly regarded he was in Holland - transforming a number of unfashionable teams, most notably rescueing a relegation threatened Wallwijk and turning them into European contenders. His record shows that he has been a success in every job he has had and is known to be a very astute tactician.

The word on the street is that Jol was indeed the first choice for the job originally, on Frank Arnesens recomendation, before the Spurs board were swayed by the bigger name of Santini, believing it would appease fans who were promised a top level manager after flirtations with the likes of Trappatoni.

Martin Jol appears to court the respect of some of the games top people and is apparently very popular with everyone at the club so hopefully common sense will finally prevail at Spurs and we will make a sensible choice in appointing someone who at least has the ability to speak English.

I think that levy wont be too upset to see the back of santini, the only reason Jol didn't get the job in the first place is that Levy believed that the fans would not stand for an unknown coach.

Jol is Frank's man, so there probably(!!!) wont be any power struggle if he gets the job (if there was one in the first place). Plus having both most of coaching/managing careers in holland they should have similar philosophies on the direction of the club. If this philosophy is the correct one emains to be seen.

I agree with everything that has been said except the one thing that concerns me is this superb tactician tag. Peter Shreeve, Roy Hodgson, Don Howe all were credited with being wonderful tacticians but they were pants at managing a football team. What Spurs need now is a man motivator more than a tactician we have a decent squad who should be performing better than has been the case I do not mean the results but just the will to compete for THFC which seems to be lacking in recent weeks. Or else we could go for the dream team of David Pleat and Christian Gross. LOL

the bottom line is any manager needs time, the media in my opinion forced Gross out, but look at him now. hes doing a fine job at basle, the media again forced us to get a high profile manager -santini, whom in my opinion again was only aquired because the other fashionable names at the time couldnt be swayed, we could do a lot worse than appoint Jol, i couldnt stand another season like the last one. we need someone we have faith in, his track record doesnt seem bad, and i have faith in his best mate Arnesen.
should Jol get the nod we will have to stand by him through the rough stuff, and not be pushed by the media agian. so lets get behind him TOGETHER.
otherwise its back to square one. - LANXYID@AOL.COM -south lower

If not Jol, I'd say our 3 options are Di Negri, Voller and Camacho. To my knowledge all have left their jobs (at Porto, Roma and Real for non footballing reasons) since the start of the season and are currently available. They all also fit in with our European structure and are of suitable calibre.
