Spurs stay five points clear.

Spurs saw off Citeh yesterday with a well worked 2-1 win while the scum were beaten by Man U 2-0.  Hopefully Pompey will take at least a point on Wednesday.  Bolton also lost and I think one more Spurs win will see us in the UEFA cup next season at least.

Spurs were overall the better side against Citeh and we had 19 shots on target.  James was in top form and made some excellent saves to deny Keane twice, a defelcted Stalteri cross and Tony Gardner effort from close range.  However he was not able to stop Stalteri slotting in a rebound from a Keane save and a Carrick volley to ensure Spurs took the points today.

Gardner had a much better game than he did against Newcastle.  He much prefers to beside King and can be used as a Dawson backup with no worries but he seems to lack the confidence to be the lead man when King is injured.

Stalteri was recalled today and got a goal and attacked well.  We witnessed no mistakes by him and he had a solid game.  Tainio was also recalled and looked ok but is probably slightly short of match fitness.

Everton next, where we have an excellent record.  Fingers crossed!

TBH i think since bolton lost at the weekend we're pretty much on course for the uefa already since we're 7 points clear of bolton even if they win their game in hand...gotta remember that they've got chelsea next...

Talking to friends in the ground after the game on Saturday and in the Gilpin later and I can,t believe what a negative bunch we are. Personally I thought we were excellent for most of the match on Saturday and if it wasn,t for Englands No 4 we would have won by 4 or 5. But I got comments ranging from Jol is a lucky manager, Carricks shit, both our full backs should be replaced, Gardner needs to go (despite having a good game with King), Jenas is lazy and so on. Lets face it if we had have been offered the position that we are in now at the start of the season we all would have taken it.
Lets be honest UEFA cup would be great CL would be fantastic and I think 9 more points would do it possible if the Scum rest players before the second leg amd West Ham reach the cup final. Lets face it this is the best side we have had for years Lennon will be a world class player and with the addition of a striker, left sided midfield player and a centre back we have a team to just get better. One last thing the atmosphere is very tense lets raise the roof against Utd and Bolton and sing the lads home.

The game at the Library will decide 4th place. Personally, I think Jol has to play Davids in attack with Lennon slotting in along side Dawson at centre back. King has to be dropped to the brench and I would give Jackson the central midfield role ahead of Carrick. Robinson has been suspect all season and Jol surely is on borrowed time.

i totally agree with anonymous 9:53pm. lennon would certainly gives us more of an edge a the back with his pace and strength which i feel king slightly lacks. johnie jackson is a sleeping giant and should deffo play alongside jenas in the middle with carrick, who was woeful on saturday dropping out the squad.

davids has got to be given a chance up front! jol is taking the piss not playing him there, keano needs a rest cos he is having his worst run in our colours and its evident that he just hasnt played to the standard we expect from him.

1. Well done Stalteri - took his demotion without whingeing - came back into the team, looked solid and scored. Those who mercilessly attacked him after Chelsea should have the grace to admit as much.

2. Wasted free-kicks - too often we seem to have no idea what to do except tonk the ball at or near the defensive wall. A couple of routines with one or two variations would be welcome.

3. Throw-ins: the number of times we don not support the thrower or the receiver of the thrown ball. Practise, gentleman!

4. Robinson - stop hoofing the ball hopefully / hopelessly downfield onto the heads of defenders who win it and send it straightback / gain possession. Let's try rolling out to Stalteri or Lee or even Carrick / Jenas dropping deep. We give too much possession away too often.

5. Mido is not as good as either we or he thinks he is: Defoe and Keane together with the ball played on the deck gives us much more of a chance. Senderos had a torrid time v Man U whenever the ball was played to his left / behind him. We should be practising to take advantage of this weakness NOW! Defoe can outrun anyone in the Arse back 4 and will be the key player at the 4th place decider.

6. All credit to Jol and the team spirit he has instilled - in spite of in-and-out form we are still in 4th and have a better than even chance of taking the CL place.

7. Stay with it - we have 5 cup finals to go and the lads need support not criticism

Personally i thought the anonymous thing was a pretty funny jab at the over-negative Spurs fans (maybe i took it wrong) saying Jol is on borrowed time.
In the bar watching the game (i find it hard to make it to WHL as i am in Belfast) there were a couple of guys loudly exclaiming "F**in Carrick", "F**in Jenas" "F***in Tainio" etc etc anytime they didn't display Ronaldinho-esque touches...then they don't even get up and cheer for our goals. Some seem to be in this for sado-masochistic ends! Let's remember, we're doing well, we all want Spurs to win, and they can do it!!!! Let's let them know!

Also - Y.P. Lee is looking better and better every time i see him play - gaining confidence at the back, has skill up front, and even hit 2 good crosses on his left!

Lee YP is a more than adequate left back and the criticism towards him is xenophobic. He is skillful, nippy and cover the defense well without being too physical.I like defending done that way.
Anyone notice that he give away so few freekicks with his defending and have yet to receive a caution.Really underrated.

Some people still believes nothing coming out of Asia would be good enough.

I think with so much at stack, it's easy to get critical as glory is beckoning. This team has set the standard so high this season that we can't help but compare ourselves with the gooners.

But the gooners have some real talented young players and I can't help be jealous by some of the stuff they have over there;Febregas is the crown jewel. But the new generation Kleb,Eboue, Diaby etc. are players who can just walk into out team.Let be honest we are still some way away from their standards

The gooners have set the benchmark and we have every desire to be on the same level as them if not better.

But I love my spurs and is proud of the fact that we have a english spine compared to the gooners.Catch 22 ?Are we going to stick with this policy of recruiting promising english players while the other side is casting their net all over the world hence giving them a biiger pool to choose from ?

Re: 3.03 anon

You make some really good points but I can't agree with the "xenophobic" accusation. When Lee first played he did look a little lightweight and unsure of his positioning (another edman)but as you rightly say he's come on really well and will probably improve through next season too. If only Stalteri could always play like he did against city. Maybe he needs some more time. It's easy to forget how different the premiership is to all other leagues. A lot of players who come here must wonder what's hit them.

Go on the Spurs!

With regards to the previous post on the quality of the young arsenal side. There's no doubting there are some good players there, but as much as the last few weeks have seen them playing out of their skins and taking the scalps of some pretty illustrious european clubs, we cant forget that this is a fairly recent development. For most of the season the complaints towards them have been that Fabregas, Flamini, Senderos and co are lightweight and lack the stamina and physical ability key to the prem.
I think its no coincidence that their recent success has been in europe, where the game becomes more technical and they get to play sides who use a slower pace, ideal for arsenals high-tempo attacks.
I think compared to this Spurs have built a sustainable and consistent British squad nucleus, young enough to carry the 'potential' tag but old enough to start producing good performances over the whole season.

It seems to come down to 19 yr olds who come good over ten matches or early 20's who produce over forty.

I think whoever is in 4th come the end will show which is mnore successfull. But its worth remembering that arsenals 'celebrated' youth would count for very little if Henry wasnt banging in goals, linking play and generally being the difference from mid-table and potential euro-champs!

Good season though eh?

Finally after all the Crap players we have been linked with someone reckons we might put a bid in for Darren Bent.

I for one would welcome this transfer as the boy is quality.

Would take him over Mido anyday as the Egyptian is Lazy and over-rated. Don't get me wrong i think he adds something to the team but is too inconsistent, far too comfortable and believes his own hype.

Kuyt and Bent would surely be great signings if Mido does not stay.

Darren Bent worth a try.Much prefer Ashton, there is something about the boy that tells me that he is more suitable to spurs.

Transfer policy next season ? Buy try and trusted strikers from EPL, as our bread and butter is still the league and not CL or UEFA; Hasselbiank, Viduka, Lua Lua and Bent.I know the exotic create more excitement; Torres and/or Kuyt...but the we must not forget about cases like Cisse.

Generally foriegn wingers do well in the EPL, but we don't not have to go far, Robben would be fantastic.

One or two additions to the defense would provide the depth required; Bridge, Trabelsi and Curtis Davies, who I think would be another fantastic CB in the mould of Dawson. He is English too !

Cahill would provide the goals that is so lacking from midfield.Forget about Pederson, Gera is a better player, West Brom is odds on to go down.Lets get him.
If Graveson joins , he would provide the muscle and complement Carrick and Jenas perfectly.Time to retire the bitbull gently.

ah....I'm getting toO far ahead in my fantasy but anyway just to top it up, a 5th striker in the shape of Bellamy.

why does that guy post the same squad dat every1 tinks shud b used and even MJ has been movin to gradually over the season?! neways, watever.

well done to 5:08 Gera is fuckin quality, for all our 5000000 midfielders we still lack one who can both attack, defend, pass, run, AND ghet stuck in and make the rough challenges. bellamy in current form is admittedly, pretty damn good.

as for strikers, i really dont see hte need to sign anyone apart from if mido leaves / we can ghet a better player. we shud b playin the ball on the floor, keane shud b linkin the play sittin jus behind defoe, we have 2 relatively young strikers with A LOT to prove, especially defoe now that keane is doing well, i really don't see how keane / defoe is a "worse" partnership than jus about anyone in the premiership if we can develop our football to make use of htem and link them to the midfield. jenas / tainio should be looking to ghet forward and create goals, it only makes it "difficult" playing with 2 small strikers if the midfield dont ghet forward and help out or we jus lump long balls forward.

n not tryin to burst anyones transfer bubbles but its been proven time and time again that an average side that is well organised and can play well together in a good system can be just as if not more successful than a team of superstar signings and average/bad management?! havin a superstar who can work well in a team and slot in is hte way forward, aka henry, ronaldinho or messi, riquelme at villareal, its more about having a playmaker with talent, that also works hard for the team. (eg witout the im so great, every1 shud work for me attitude)

scuse hte ramblings, was jus typin n tinkin. lol.

come on you spurs.

millsur, agreed with your point that having a well organised squad would be better than a team of superstars; Valencia,Benfica Villareal , Porto and Werder Bremen are recent examples of sides that were successful both in the league and Europe.

But the truly great sides, AC Milan, Man U and Barcelona; teams that reach European finals year in year out continue to strengthen their squad when they can.

I admire sides like Valencia but you can see that they have not progressed very much further b'cos they have not renew their playing staff.

Wenger has created no less than 3 different championship winning sides since 1997 !(sorry if I have to bring up this example). They have not rested on their laurels and we shouldn't.

Look...when Jol took over, the first choice central midfielders were Davis and Mendes. They did their part in improving our league position from 14th to 9th spot.

This year the pairing is Davids and Carrick and we are odds on to finish 6th at least.Without continuing strengthen the squad,we could not have achieve this.

We must not keep making wholesale changes too.Next season is a season of consolidation and selective strengthening.

Its a season to make the core stronger and adding bite to some key areas. We must try to find our own Henry if possible; don't say its impossible. But thats the challenge. We need to add some depth to certain areas and remove the deadwoods.Sorry if I have to say this, we even have to remove players that might have serve us well but probably would not cut it at the next level. That is to challenge for CL spots year in year out.

As per my prediction on April 12th 10.25pm,the loss today leaves our Champs league destiny very simple:

We need at least a draw against the scum next week, before winning our last 2 games to finish on 68pts, one point ahead of Arsenal on 67 points presuming they will win their other 3 games.

Still very dissapointed today as a win would have really eased our nerves for the run in, and even a point would have been handy and deserved judging by the match report.

Feel very nervous about missing our leader Ledley for those massive last 3 games. This is the time for the other squad youngsters filling in-Gardner, Davenport and Barnard to prove they are real top Prem men and deserve to stay as part of the Spurs revolution next season.

Vinny.

Anonymous Anonymous said...

Other positives we can draw from:

This season we have shown the ability to bounce back from defeats well, so we'll be even more G'd up for the game next week.

After next Saturday's game, Arse will be confident of winning their other 3 games, but no games are easy in the prem like Manu v Sunderland at home 0-0!

Also if we do get through this without Ledley it will show that we are ready as a "squad" to be challenging in the Champions League, Prem and Domestic cups. As this equals a lot of games unlike this season when we have been just concentrating on the prem.

So means our best players like Ledley will not always be available for every game. And lets be honest the Scum have had their fair share of injuries this season and are still running us close for 4th place. Thats the importance of a larger squad with competent replacements.

On a last note, even if we do end up finishing 5th, it will have been a great season and we should be happy to have progressed to European football again! COYS!

We played very well against Man U.But I'm surprised how open we were in the first 20 mins. Its like a high noon shoot out and it is very dangerous against one of the best 2 counter attacking teams in the EPL.
Instead of being patient we went for the kill. Though we take the game to Man U ,in the end their superior attacking play wins the day.
Agianst team liek Blackburn we sit back but against team like Man U, we threw all caution to the wind, would someobe explain to me what Jol is up to ?
There are some positives; Davenport,Jenas and Lennon, they were up for it and deserves better.

UP YOURS WANKCHOPS

He wants ARSE in the CL so 'stars' like Fibreglass, Ebouee and Reyes? can 'flourish'

What a absolute CUNT
If these 'stars' (my Arse) were plying their trade for Sunderland we wouldn't hear jack shit about tehm.

What about REAL young (ENGLISH) stars like Dawson, Lennon, Huddlestone & Davenport to name a few........also Ledley, Robbo, Defoe, Carrick, Jenas, Routledge (Bridge!)

I want Spurs to get that 4th spot soooo badly it hurts. Come on you Lilywhites, get a result at the Library and march on!!

And then we can say to all the fucking wankers who slag Spurs off and our achievements this year........ a BIG FUCK YOU

& to the Spurs Fans who say we're also not ready and would prefer Uefa Cup, FUCK YOU TOO

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying we'd win it or even get past the first Rnd but i'd like a crack at it & know what cup competition i'd prefer to watch us in.

COYS

Either way:
We're all going on a European Tour
A European Tour
A European Tour

Just hope it's CL !!

And wot's more; Have you noticed how many pundits give statistics which are only relevant from when the premiership started??! What's that all about? Talk about desperate self promotion. Since when did the history of football begin with the premier league? They can fuck off too!

Goodness.... with Blackburn losing lats night, we have guaranted oursleves at least 6th spot in the EPL and hence UEFA cup bar a miracle. If I get my sums right, only Bolton can catch us up and get 61 points but we have superior GD to them of 10.

We should toast the boys for that achievement
